Baby Travel Checklist for a 2-Hour Trip

The quick, no-overthinking packing list for short outings with a baby.

The 2-Hour Trip: What You Actually Need

Here's the thing about leaving the house with a baby: your instinct is to pack for a week-long expedition. For a 2-hour trip, you need way less than you think. Here's what actually matters.

The Non-Negotiables (Every Short Trip)

  • 3–4 nappies — One per hour plus backups. Non-negotiable.
  • Wipes — A travel pack or a few handfuls in a zip-lock bag.
  • 1 nappy bag (the plastic kind) — For sealing a dirty nappy when there's no bin.
  • 1 change of clothes — Full outfit. You'll need it the one time you don't bring it.
  • Dummy/pacifier — If they use one. Bring a spare.

Feeding (Age-Dependent)

Under 6 Months (Bottle-Fed)

  • 1 pre-made bottle or formula + water in a thermos
  • A bib or muslin cloth

Under 6 Months (Breastfed)

  • A muslin cloth for cover/cleanup
  • That's genuinely it — the food is attached to Mum

6–12 Months

  • A snack pouch or small container of finger food
  • Sippy cup with water
  • A bib

12+ Months

  • 2–3 snacks (crackers, banana, cheese sticks, raisins)
  • Water bottle
  • A bib if they're a messy eater

Nice-to-Have (But Not Essential)

  • Small toy or teether — Distraction weapon for cafés and waiting rooms.
  • Muslin cloth — Works as a burp cloth, shade cover, surface protector, and emergency bib.
  • Hand sanitiser — For post-nappy-change when there's no sink.
  • Hat + sunscreen — If you're going outside (SPF 50+ for baby).
  • Spare shirt for you — Only if you're going somewhere you care about looking presentable. Otherwise, wear the vomit like a badge of honour.

What You Do NOT Need for a 2-Hour Trip

Put these back. You're going to the shops, not the Amazon.

  • The entire nappy bag — a small backpack or tote is fine
  • Multiple outfit changes — one is enough
  • Every toy they own
  • A blanket (unless it's genuinely cold)
  • The baby bath
  • Your anxiety about forgetting something — you'll be fine

The "Grab and Go" Trick

Keep a small pre-packed pouch by the front door with: 3 nappies, a travel wipes pack, a nappy bag, and a spare onesie. When you need to leave the house quickly, grab it and go. Restock it when you get home. This one habit will save you 15 minutes of panicked packing every single time.

By Destination

Café / Restaurant

  • Nappy essentials + snacks + small toy
  • Baby carrier is often easier than a pram in tight spaces
  • Pro tip: sit near the exit for quick escapes

Park / Playground

  • Nappy essentials + snacks + water + hat + sunscreen
  • A mat or blanket to sit on
  • Pram or carrier depending on the walk

Visiting Friends / Family

  • Nappy essentials + snacks
  • Portable change mat (not everyone has a clean surface)
  • Honestly the lightest pack — they'll have everything else
